Baldur's Gate 3: How to save Volo from the Baldur's Gate mob

The adventures of Volo have no end in Baldur's Gate 3, and if you thought your time with him would be over after Act 2, think again. Once again, captured in the third act, you will have to do everything in your power to save him.

Unlike last time, there won't be a way to get him out without getting involved with the Cult of the Absolute a little. Keep your weapons ready and prepare to deal with an angry mob up close and personal. Oh, and make sure to bring some water. Lots of water.

Where To Find Volo In Baldur's Gate

Baldur

Volo is located on the other side of the Underdark, near the Steelworks Factory and the Docks (Coordinates: X: -226, Y: -150). As you approach, you will find him bound to a chair, with a long trail of flammable oil leading to him and a large barrel of smoke powder behind him.

Once you get close enough, you will have the opportunity to speak with the angry mob who accuses him of spreading lies and propaganda. The outburst of anger is so hypocritical that it's as if an apple is accusing an orange of being a fruit.

In most cases, you cannot persuade or intimidate the cult to release Volo (though there are exceptions for those who have taken darker story paths). Most will end up getting into a brawl with the mob.

How To Free And Protect Volo

Baldur

Volo will be bound to the chair in the first round. You have approximately five rounds to save him, but with so much fire being thrown around in the battle, you might only have two rounds.

We recommend sending your most agile unit forward and, in the first turn, shooting at the chair beneath Volo to make it collapse.

Do not shoot the chair beneath Volo with a fire-based attack. This would accidentally ignite the oil and smoke powder barrel, instantly killing him.

Baldur

Once Volo is freed, he will flee towards the Docks. He may suffer some fire damage if the oil is ignited, but he will survive. After he is free and running, the mob usually does not pursue him any further.

Once he is safe, you can focus on the cultists and those who seem loyal to Bhaal. Most of them prefer ranged combat and avoid melee confrontations.

Baldur

Engage the cultists directly and use spells that can inflict significant disadvantages on them. Powerful ice attacks like Ice Storm work well here to slow their movement and prevent them from taking accurate shots.

Keep your spellcasters in the background and hide them around the corner on the right or behind the crates on the left, so that they only emerge for attacks and then retreat.

Baldur

Attack, rinse, and repeat this process until all the cultists are gone. Fortunately, there are no bosses here, and they are fairly straightforward (although a bit tedious).

Once they are all eliminated, you can approach Volo, who is trembling and waiting at the Docks on the left. Speak to him, and he will agree to visit your camp. If you haven't done so already, you can choose to have Volo perform surgery on your eye.
