In Baldur's Gate 3, players can engage in complex and intimate relationships with eight of the game's main companions.
The romance options vary in quality and depth, with some feeling rushed or lacking substance compared to others.
Shadowheart and Gale offer some of the most rewarding and intricately detailed romances in the game, while the love stories of Minthara and Halsin may leave players craving for more.
Anyone with an internet connection and even the slightest interest in gaming knows that Baldur's Gate 3 includes some spicy fantasy scenes. However, in this highly acclaimed CRPG of the year, not everything revolves around passionate nights and various stages of undress.
The hopeless romantics among us have many reasons to rejoice, as complex and intimate relationships with eight of the main companions are possible in the game. Therefore, we have compiled a spoiler-free list of all romantic NPCs in your party, ranked from worst to best, to assist you in deciding to whom you want to give your heart during your gameplay.
8 Minthara: Exclusively For Players In Their Villain Era
At best, Minthara's love story stands out like a sore thumb, and at worst, it feels like an afterthought. To win her over for romance, you must make some wicked decisions to have her join your camp. This will result in losing access to three other companions in the further plot, and your group members will have quite a bit to say about it.
However, those determined to win the heart of the cultist paladin leader must commit to their dark side to keep the fire burning. Minthara despises any signs of weakness, compassion, or kindness, which often results in a lack of intimacy in this romance option compared to the others.
7 Halsin: A Bearly Believable Romance
Originally, Halsin was not intended to be a romantic partner in Baldur's Gate 3, and since he is largely absent for the majority of the first act, it is not surprising that his love story feels somewhat hollow. This shape-shifting, nature-loving druid master is a great flirt and a true charmer in conversation, but the romance feels rushed, and the conclusion is rather disappointing compared to many of the other companions.
Fortunately, those who wish to pursue this grumpy old codger can do so without having to forego other more intimate storylines, at least temporarily, thanks to Halsin's polyamorous relationship. He is content with you sharing love with other members of the group, but be warned - not everyone you are interested in will be open to such an arrangement.
6 Wyll: Wyll They, Won’t They?
Early in your adventure, you will encounter Wyll, the brave bladesman of the borders, and for those who wish to fall head over heels for a stereotypical hero, this love story promises much chivalry and charm. If you play as a protector of the weak, it won't be difficult to pique Wyll's interest in your character.
Help him break his ties with the half-fiend Mizora and discover who he is without his patron, and you will soon have a perfectly pleasant and respectful lover. However, a romance with Wyll may lack the depth found in other love stories.
5 Karlach: Too Hot To Handle
Originally, Karlach was not available as a romantic companion in Baldur's Gate 3's Early Access, but since the official launch of the game, this fiery yet friendly barbarian has become a flirtatious fan favorite. After having her heart replaced by an infernal machine by her boss from hell, Karlach's love life took a backseat as she struggled to control the destructive fires within her.
By delving into her questline and helping her reconnect with people, a cute and sentimental romance unfolds that feels sincere, although sometimes a bit rushed. However, it is worth noting that due to her circumstances, you may find Karlach's love story a bit bittersweet.
4 Astarion: All Bite No Bark
The elven rogue Astarion is another character you will encounter shortly after your cruise on the Nautiloid. As a cunning scammer with a secret and plenty to say, one might assume that a relationship with him would be superficial and carefree. However, if you delve beneath the surface (and understand his situation), you will discover a surprisingly romantic love story.
If you want to pique his interest, keep in mind that compared to your other, more heroic group members, Astarion leans significantly towards the darker side. You will have to make a few ruthless decisions and try not to save too many people in order to catch his attention. However, if you succeed, you have the opportunity to shape Astarion's entire character with your choices, making this love story one of the most rewarding romances in the game.
3 Shadowheart: A Dark Heart Of Gold
Once you stumble out of the wreckage of the Nautiloid in the first act, Shadowheart will be the first companion you can add to your party. Although the game begins with her undeniable devotion to Shar, the goddess of darkness and loss, her entire attitude can change based on how you interact with her.
To take your relationship to another level, show interest in her, her beliefs, and her story. As trust in you grows, an enchanting love story unfolds, making it one of the best romances in the game and a truly sweet narrative. Aside from the romance, Shadowheart is a central character in the main story of Baldur's Gate 3 and a companion worth investing time in.
2 Lae'zel: Tough But Tender
This Githyanki warrior isn't here to make friends, but play your cards right and maybe she's here to find a lover. As one of the first companions to suggest an intimate encounter, Lae'zel's character development and romance are a great reward if you can handle a more fiery, dominant sweetheart.
Have some patience and stick with her (even if she insults you), and what starts as pure physical attraction can evolve into a thoughtful and loving romance. You will get to know Lae'zel's softer side, learn more about what drives her, and witness firsthand her captivating storyline.
1 Gale: The Wizard Of Waterdeep Wants To Get Deep
Perhaps not surprisingly, the majority of players in the early access version of Baldur's Gate 3 pursued a romance with Gale. And who could blame them? As one of the first available companions in the game, this wizard is a tough nut to crack, but once his feelings are revealed (and reciprocated), you can enjoy a tender, somewhat traditional relationship with this charming and charismatic spellcaster.
The romance with Gale is one of the most detailed in the game, with the budding relationship between you feeling more natural and complex than the others. If you want to be wooed, you could do worse than casting a glance in Gale's direction, but don't worry, there are plenty of passionate nighttime activities in which you can participate.
