If you have explored the Sword Coast in Baldur's Gate 3, you have likely encountered the Strange Ox. There are many peculiar and eccentric characters you can come across while playing, and many of them have their own secrets. However, the Strange Ox is particularly enigmatic. Unlike the other cows, it is different and rather impolite towards you.
If you have spoken to him, you know that something is amiss, but he won't tell you what it is. As you progress through the story, he reappears repeatedly, and eventually, you will encounter him again outside the city of Baldur's Gate. This time, however, he is more willing to speak - he needs your assistance.
Where To Find The Devilish Ox
In the druid grove, you encounter the Strange Ox for the first time. He continues to appear, remaining gloomy and elusive about his true identity no matter what you do. Instead, you must wait for Act Three to commence before you can make progress in uncovering who or what the Strange Ox is.
In the druid grove, you encounter the Strange Ox for the first time. He continues to appear, remaining gloomy and elusive about his true identity no matter what you do. Instead, you must wait for Act Three to commence before you can make progress in uncovering who or what the Strange Ox is.
The ox needs to get into the city, but it's difficult to pass the guards when he's as big as he is. Agree to help, and the ox will magically transform into an apple that you can pick up. You must interact with the apple, or else it will remain on the ground.
You cannot consume the apple while you are eating food.
How To Smuggle The Apple Into The City
To complete the quest, you must smuggle the apple into the Lower City, which entails passing the checkpoint unharmed. If you are a druid, you can transform into a cat and stealthily sneak past. Alternatively, you can use Polymorph to turn into a sheep and casually stroll past the guards. There are numerous ways to bypass the checkpoint without getting arrested.
Once you've passed the checkpoint, proceed past Sharess' Caress to reach the Lower City. Upon entering, you will receive a notification indicating the completion of the quest. You'll receive a message of gratitude along with the Shapeshifter's Ring. It grants the wearer a bonus of +1d4 to all rolls while disguised or transformed.
You would also receive this ring if you had killed the ox in one of the previous encounters with it!
