The developers of Cult of the Lamb have announced that they will not actually remove the game from digital sales platforms.
The change in pricing policy by Unity, where developers are charged for each download, has sparked controversy and dissatisfaction among developers.
The team at Massive Monster, the creators of Cult of the Lamb, clarified that their threat to remove the game was just a joke on Twitter. However, they are still not in agreement with Unity's decision and critically perceive the negative impact on the gaming industry.
The developers of Cult of the Lamb recently clarified that they will not withdraw their game from digital sales platforms on January 1, 2024. Originally, the team had threatened to remove the game during the controversy surrounding Unity's changes to licensing fees, which angered developers worldwide.
Unity recently announced a significant change to its pricing policy in the form of the Unity Runtime Fee. Developers whose games meet certain criteria would be charged for each download, paying between $0.01 and $0.20 per download depending on the popularity of the title. The lack of clarity on how Unity arrived at these numbers and how trustworthy they were caused a stir. In response, the developers of Cult of the Lamb stated that the game could be removed starting from January 1st.
Now, Massive Monster has stated that the company will indeed not withdraw Cult of the Lamb from stores. According to a new video, the entire threat was nothing more than a joke made on Twitter that quickly got blown out of proportion, leading the team to clarify the situation. However, Massive Monster also reiterated that the company is opposed to Unity's decision. The development team would have to learn completely new skills to port the game from Unity's engine if they were to make any changes, and these new fees negatively impact the entire gaming industry.
Massive Monster also took the opportunity to mention that the team is continuing to work hard on creating the next major content update for the game, for which no official release date has been set yet. Previously, Massive Monster had released the "Relic of the Old Faith" update for Cult of the Lamb, which improved the game in various ways.
Unity's decision has had an impact on the entire gaming industry. While not many studios are openly discussing removing their games, at least some of them are considering no longer using Unity's engine, as is the case with the developers of Rust. According to Facepunch Studios, a potential sequel to Rust will not utilize Unity, as the team has lost trust in the company behind the popular engine. Other developers currently share similar opinions, so it remains to be seen how Unity will respond.
Cult of the Lamb is available for Nintendo Switch, PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
