Ermac was revealed in July of this year as part of the first DLC for Mortal Kombat 1, after months of leaks, rumors, and teasers. However, the reveal received little enthusiasm from fans, with many of them requesting him to please wear a mask. Now, the in-game design has leaked, and the sentiment is largely the same.
The first glimpse of Ermac was granted to us through a Kombat Pack rendering, alongside other characters like Omni-Man and Peacemaker. While the in-game design matches this concept, viewing it in-game provides a new perspective. And this new perspective has led to some people warming up to Mortal Kombat 1's Ermac. However, the desire for him to cover his face is still present.
"If he has some good masks for his equipment option, then honestly, this design is not bad," said Corey Reynolds. "His face simply looks like the scrotum of a dead kangaroo."
Dangelouss observes that the overall concept of Ermac in MK1 is better, even if his appearance is somewhat rocky or wrinkled, as he no longer glides through the air like a ghostly phantom. "The hood still sits tightly around the neck, which bothers me. However, he now has solid ground traction and doesn't seem like a floating freak anymore. I'll take it."
Mrplow8 and others are mostly concerned that his appearance is unfamiliar to the Ermac we know and love, even if the implementation in the game is better than in the reveal trailer. "He looks much cooler in the game [...] But he still doesn't really look like Ermac."
Others, like Such-Description6541, are big fans of the costume but not of the person wearing it. "His outfit looks so cool, but his face is literally Voldemort."
It's not the only design that Mortal Kombat fans have been upset about in the past week. Recently, we got a better look at Jean-Claude Van Damme's Johnny Cage skin, which finally brings the martial artist slash actor into the series after 30 years. It's fitting since he inspired Johnny Cage after declining to appear in the very first game.
However, fans find the resemblance a bit off, so they have already started adjusting and fine-tuning it to make the skin look more like JCVD. Admittedly, fan edits are purely visual and do not take into account his movements or expressions, but perhaps modders will attempt to customize JCVD once the game is released. And if Ermac doesn't have a mask by then, they will likely take care of that as well.
