Fans of Mortal Kombat 1 have fixed the Jean-Claude Van Damme skin of Johnny Cage

Fans of Mortal Kombat 1 are not particularly impressed with Johnny Cage's unique Jean-Claude Van Damme skin and have already made edits to make it resemble the actor more closely.

Over 31 years ago, Ed Boon and John Tobias set out to develop a game featuring the legendary martial artist Jean-Claude Van Damme, which ultimately didn't come to fruition due to scheduling conflicts. While that may seem sad, it led to the creation of Mortal Kombat, the first installment of one of the most popular fighting game series ever. The spirit of Van Damme lived on in Mortal Kombat through one of its most iconic characters, Hollywood actor Johnny Cage, who was clearly recognizable as an homage to the star of Bloodsport.

Now, 30 years later, the circle is closing in Mortal Kombat 1, which includes a Jean-Claude Van Damme skin for Johnny Cage as part of the game's Premium Edition. The skin not only changes Johnny's clothing to resemble his appearance from Mortal Kombat 1 but also swaps his face and voice with those of Jean-Claude Van Damme.

At least... that's how it should be. NetherRealm has given us a first proper look at the skin through a new trailer released earlier this week. However, some fans are not entirely satisfied with the end result, claiming that it doesn't really resemble Jean-Claude Van Damme and looks somewhat strange for some reason.

Although I was initially somewhat confused by the amount of criticism directed towards the skin, after looking at some comparison photos, it suddenly became clearer that the current Jean-Claude skin is not quite accurate and doesn't really resemble the actor. The issue appears to lie with some of the facial expressions, which look somewhat strange in motion and seem to be based on the standard Johnny Cage skin.

Not all fans are dissatisfied with the skin, but it appears that the majority is. The skin seems to have bothered some players enough that they actually took it upon themselves to fix it by creating fan edits that make Jean-Claude look more like himself again. Perhaps the best fan edit was created by Jake Shaw and originally posted in a Facebook Mortal Kombat group before being shared by Twitter user JustMKollum.

The fan edit practically changes every aspect of the face of the MK Jean-Claude skin, including the size of his nose, mouth, eyebrows, and eyes. Even if you are satisfied with the Jean-Claude skin in Mortal Kombat 1, it's hard to argue that this edit doesn't resemble the actor much more and overall looks like a better skin.
