Gale, who describes himself as a "renowned Wizard," can be recruited as a companion during the early stages of Baldur's Gate 3. Being a Wizard, he possesses a diverse repertoire of spells, ranging from powerful offensive abilities to subtle solutions for puzzles.
Gale is generally characterized as polite and straightforward. Although he harbors secrets, he has valid reasons for keeping them, and he readily opens up to those who are willing to assist him. While he opposes destructive actions, his personal ambitions can be leveraged to persuade him to engage in various deeds.
Spoiler Warning!
Who Is Gale?
Gale Dekarios, or Gale of Waterdeep as he prefers to be known, is a Wizard who once possessed unimaginable power. Due to his remarkable magical abilities from a young age, he was chosen by Mystra, the goddess of magic, to be her protégé. Initially, she served as his mentor, but their bond evolved into a romantic relationship over time.
Gale desired to demonstrate his value to Mystra by proving his readiness to learn even the most forbidden forms of magic. With this goal in mind, he sought out a tome that contained Netherese magic—a potent form of magic predating Mystra's era—with the intention of returning it to her. He successfully acquired the tome, but as he delved into its study, the magic within it became bound to him, becoming deeply ingrained in his chest.
The magic contained within the tome was highly corrupted, making it dangerous for Mystra even if Gale were to successfully present her with the orb.
With the magic now residing within him in the form of an orb, it incessantly craves an insatiable amount of magic to sustain itself. If the orb is not regularly nourished by consuming magical artifacts, it will become increasingly unstable and eventually explode. The resulting explosion would have catastrophic consequences on a massive scale.
Can The Netherese Orb Be Removed?
If anyone has the capability to assist with this situation, it would be Mystra. However, she is hesitant to aid Gale in this matter. On one hand, Gale's own arrogance led to his current predicament, and it is seen as his own responsibility to resolve it. On the other hand, Mystra desires for Gale to utilize the power of the Orb to defeat the Absolute, a powerful entity, which would result in the Absolute's demise but also serve as a means of redemption for Gale.
However, various discussions towards the end of the game suggest potential solutions. Entrusting the Crown of Karsus to Mystra would likely rectify many of the past mistakes, as long as precautions are taken to prevent its future misuse. Another option is to allow Gale to take possession of the Crown, potentially granting him godlike abilities and enabling him to remove the orb on his own.
Can You Romance Gale?
Indeed, the progress is gradual. This is primarily attributed to Gale's enduring affection for Mystra, despite her request for him to make a sacrificial act. Her divine rejection of his love has left him hesitant to pursue any other relationships. Additionally, the presence of the orb within him poses a threat, as prolonged proximity to Gale puts others at risk of being annihilated by its power.
If you decide to pursue a relationship with Gale, it's important to know that he highly values diplomacy and prefers to avoid violence whenever possible. He greatly appreciates acts of goodness. Assisting him in his quest will also increase his approval of you. However, it's important to note that any romantic involvement may not develop significantly until you reach Baldur's Gate in the game.
