With the introduction of trading in Pokémon GO, players are wondering if it is now possible to trade Shadow Pokémon. If so, could the trading system be exploited to obtain more high IV Pokémon?
Shadow Pokemon Trading in Pokemon GO
Unfortunately, trainers in Pokémon GO are unable to trade Shadow Pokémon. Since July 2019, Niantic's trading rules prohibit the exchange of Shadow Pokémon in any trade. Furthermore, it is also not permitted to transfer Shadow Pokémon to Pokémon HOME.
The prohibition of trading Shadow Pokémon was introduced in response to players who were exploiting this feature. Due to the ability to obtain perfect IVs (Hundos) through trading and purifying Shadow Pokémon, certain trainers gained an unfair advantage. To address this issue and ensure a more balanced gameplay experience, the prohibition was implemented.
Will Shadow Pokemon Trading Return to Pokemon GO
The reintroduction of Shadow trading in Pokémon GO is highly unlikely. This decision is based on the negative impact that trading Shadow Pokémon has on the game balance for players. Including this feature would enable trainers to effortlessly acquire perfect Pokémon, undermining the intended gameplay experience of Pokémon GO, which emphasizes effort and Pokémon collection.
How to Trade Shadow Pokemon in Pokemon GO
Currently, the only way to trade a Shadow Pokémon is by purifying it. In order to make a specific Pokémon eligible for trading, players must first remove the Shadow effect. As a result, the Pokémon loses its Shadow-related advantages and is no longer eligible for Lucky trades.
A purified Pokémon has a higher appraisal and requires fewer candies to evolve or power up. However, it also loses the additional 20% damage and the -20% defense effect after purification.
How to Get Shadow Pokemon Without Trading
Shadow raids are an excellent way to catch Shadow Pokémon in Pokémon GO. In August, players have the opportunity to defeat 1-star, 3-star, and 5-star Shadow Pokémon in gyms and have a chance to obtain them after the raids. Players can also complete the Giovanni quest line or use the Super Rocket Radar to locate and defeat Team GO Rocket grunts in order to obtain their Shadow Pokémon.
Pokemon GO is available now for mobile devices.
