Kratos' Leviathan Axe has a mind of its own in this strange clip

The Leviathan Axe is one of Kratos' most powerful weapons, but it seems to fail him in a strange God of War clip. The 2018 God of War game marked a new chapter in Santa Monica Studios' epic hack-and-slash franchise, with Kratos settling down in Midgard after successfully seeking revenge against the gods of ancient Greece in the original trilogy. No longer the rage-driven warrior he was in the previous God of War games, Kratos is instead haunted by his past actions as he tries to raise his new son, Atreus, and guide him toward a better path in life.

In the two God of War games based on Norse mythology, Kratos receives a new weapon to reflect his calmer nature: the mighty Leviathan Axe. Forged by the dwarf brothers Brok and Sindri to counter Thor's Mjölnir, the Leviathan Axe was passed on to the deceased Laufey, who in turn gifted it to her husband, Kratos, before her death. It is imbued with the power of ice, contrasting Kratos' fiery Blades of Chaos, and the former Spartan warrior can throw it at his enemies to execute brutal ranged attacks.

The player can then instantly recall the legendary Leviathan Axe to its master with the press of a button, but apparently, this doesn't always work as intended. Such was the case for Reddit user fminf, who shared a strange gameplay clip from the 2018 God of War reboot on r/GodofWar over the past weekend. Kratos throws his Leviathan Axe as usual at a group of enemies, but when the aged Olympian warrior attempts to recall the weapon, it instead shoots into the sky. In the title of their post, fminf jokes that the Leviathan Axe is returning to Faye, as she was the original owner of the weapon.

Fortunately, the Leviathan Axe is not the only weapon in Kratos' arsenal. In the midst of the 2018 God of War, Kratos retrieves his long-lost Blades of Chaos and utilizes their fire-based attacks to fend off the forces of Odin. In God of War Ragnarok, Kratos obtains a third weapon in the form of the Draupnir Spear, a golden lance that can counteract the arrogant future visions of Heimdall. However, the Leviathan Axe remains the weapon most closely associated with the Norse God of War games as it is the first weapon that players have access to.

Laufey famously gave Kratos his Leviathan Axe, ensuring that it would always protect him and Atreus. This makes it even more amusing that in fminf's God of War clip, the weapon suddenly fails to support the spirit of Sparta during an intense battle. One can only imagine Kratos' disappointed grunt as his axe shoots towards the sky, leaving him and Atreus to finish their fight without its icy power.

God of War is available now for PC and PS4.
