A newly discovered introductory dialogue between Kenshi and Kung Lao in Mortal Kombat 1 includes a reference to the most underestimated combatant of Mortal Kombat X - Kung Jin.
Undoubtedly, the most intriguing aspect of Mortal Kombat 1 lies in how the time loop orchestrated by Liu Kang has profoundly influenced numerous characters, ranging from the transformation of Scorpion's identity to the captivating allure of Reptile. While most of the primary combatants have undergone changes in one way or another, it appears that a considerable number of background characters have also experienced shifts, including some referenced in pre-battle dialogues.
Thus far, several characters have been mentioned in these introductory dialogues, including Suchin, Jade, and Raiden's sister (who may correspond to Fujin in this timeline), but there is yet another character that holds particular interest, especially for those who champion the cause of the Kombat Kids like myself - Kung Jin from Mortal Kombat X.
As presented by YouTuber Mitsuownes, Kung Lao is now playable in the latest version of the game, granting various content creators the opportunity to witness some of his introductory dialogues. In a video compiling some of his interactions with Kenshi, Kung Lao makes an intriguing allusion to Kung Jin, affirming that he remains somehow present in one form or another.
During the battle against Kenshi, Kung Lao seizes the opportunity to say, "My cousin Kung Jin has a fascination with the Yakuza!", alluding to Kenshi's new storyline. In response, Kenshi advises Kung Lao to do whatever it takes to curb his interest. Although not a significant piece of dialogue, it confirms that Kung Jin is alive and well in this universe, suggesting that the rest of the Kombat Kids will likely find their place there at some point as well.
It raises some intriguing questions regarding Kung Jin's age in this timeline. According to the lore, they have always been cousins, but in Mortal Kombat X, there appears to be an age gap of approximately 20 to 30 years between them. However, here, Kung Jin seems to be slightly closer in age to Kung Lao, although he still appears somewhat younger.
Since Mortal Kombat X, we haven't heard or seen much of Kung Jin, as the Kombat Kids were not the most popular addition. However, Takeda has been confirmed to be included in the first Kombat Pass (albeit seemingly older for some reason), so it is possible that he will make a grand comeback wielding his bow and arrows at some point.
