While the pursuit of Lightroots is one of the primary motivations for venturing into Tears of the Kingdom's Depths, the reward for completing this task proves to be helpful in achieving a 100% completion rate in the game.

In total, there are 120 Lightroots scattered throughout Tears of the Kingdom. These large plant organs not only illuminate their surroundings but also serve as markers for the game's surface shrines, as each Lightroot is located directly beneath a shrine. Collecting all Lightroots rewards the player with the Dispelling Darkness Medal, which can be found in Link's inventory. The item's description states that it "commemorates blessings received."

However, it turns out that the Dispelling Darkness Medal serves a greater purpose than merely being proof of one's underground exploration. It actually illuminates The Depths in Tears of the Kingdom. A Reddit user named Vekkul recently highlighted how collecting all Lightroots infuses The Depths with a faint ambient light, providing the player with a clear view of their surroundings in all directions. While certain areas of The Depths are reasonably lit around activated Lightroots, many pockets of the underground map still remain shrouded in pitch-black darkness. To see far in these areas, Link would typically need to use Brightbloom Seeds or similar items until acquiring the appropriately named Dispelling Darkness Medal.

Considering the fact that hundreds of fans voted to bring Vekkul's tip to the front page of the r/TearsOfTheKingdom subreddit, it seems that many players were unaware of the reward for finding all Lightroots in the game. This information might serve as motivation for some fans to reconsider the idea of aiming for 100% completion, which involves thorough underground exploration beyond just locating Lightroots.

Specifically, it is worth noting that all Schema Stones and numerous armor pieces are located in The Depths. Therefore, attempting to find them all before activating all 120 Lightroots necessitates extensive farming of light-bestowing items, which some players may find discouraging. The same goes for upgrading Link's battery reserves in Tears of the Kingdom, as it can only be accomplished by collecting a substantial amount of Zonaite throughout The Depths.

Fans who are hoping for Nintendo to offer additional incentives to fully explore The Depths should not hold their breath, as there are no current plans for Tears of the Kingdom DLC, according to Eiji Aonuma, the long-time producer of the series.
