After numerous requests from fans, Nintendo has announced that Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door will finally receive a reissue, expected to be released in 2024.
Nintendo's final major Direct presentation of the year has just concluded, and we were treated to a glimpse of a multitude of new games, including Princess Peach Showtime, a remake of Mario vs. Donkey Kong, and the most exciting announcement of all, an amiibo for Sora's appearance in Smash. Despite the heartbreaking absence of F-Zero 99, it was overall a rather impressive presentation, culminating in Nintendo's last blockbuster announcement—a reissue of the GameCube classic, Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door.
That is correct, undeniably the best Paper Mario game is making its long-awaited return after nearly 20 years. In fact, it will have been a full two decades since the game's original release in 2004 by the time the remake is planned to launch in 2024. Coupled with the upcoming release of Super Mario RPG later this year, there has never been a better time to be a fan of Mario RPGs.
The relatively short trailer for the remake didn't reveal too much, aside from a glimpse of its "enhanced graphics." However, that was all we really needed to see, considering how long fans have been requesting it from Nintendo. It's a bit peculiar that we seemingly skipped over the original Paper Mario entirely (excluding its re-release on Nintendo Switch Online). But for now, we'll let that slide, as The Thousand-Year Door is generally regarded as the best installment in the series.
Aside from the enhanced graphics, it remains unclear whether there will be any further changes to the game for the remake. So far, it appears to be the same game, but it's worth noting that Nintendo has a tendency to add extras and tweak certain mechanics for many of its reissues, as was the case with all three HD Zelda games.
The press release issued by Nintendo after the Direct contained the following information about the remake of The Thousand-Year Door: "Furthermore, a visually enhanced version of the Nintendo GameCube game Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door has been announced for the Nintendo Switch. More information will be released in the future."
This actually suggests that the remake includes more than just a graphical enhancement; otherwise, there probably wouldn't be much to report about it. On the other hand, it could also be information regarding a release date and additional trailers, meaning we'll have to wait until 2024 to learn a bit more.
