The release date of Alan Wake 2 has been changed to avoid direct competition with other highly anticipated games in October.
The 10-day delay was a strategic decision by Remedy Entertainment to avoid a head-to-head competition with games like Spider-Man 2.
Alan Wake 2 will now be released after other notable titles such as Super Mario Bros. Wonder and Spider-Man 2, which could potentially have an impact on its success.
Remedy Entertainment has stated that the release date of Alan Wake 2 was changed due to the presence of other games launching in October, and the desire to avoid direct competition with specific titles. The developer of the cult adventure revealed in its recently released gameplay trailer "Dark Place" that Alan Wake 2 would experience a delay. The original release date of October 17th has now been shifted to October 27th.
Over a decade after the release of the original game, Alan Wake 2 is one of the most highly anticipated launches of this year. Instead of having a tone full of Twin Peaks dramedy, Alan Wake 2 draws inspiration from survival horror games like Capcom's Resident Evil series. However, it will also be coming out in the same month as other eagerly awaited releases like Spider-Man 2. Sam Lake, the creator of Alan Wake, discussed in a recent interview the ten-day delay and how the game arrived at its new date.
In an IGN interview with Lake, the interviewer notes that the announcement of the delay of Alan Wake 2 was made with active transparency. According to Lake, at Remedy, they decided that since October is crowded with popular and highly anticipated releases, they didn't have to compete "head to head" with them. Lake mentions that Insomniac's Spider-Man 2 was one of those games, which led Remedy to postpone the release of Alan Wake 2 by a few days.
In October, there were already numerous releases planned towards the end of the month, such as Super Mario Bros. Wonder and Spider-Man 2, which were set to compete on the same day. Other games in this packed month include another survival horror game called Alone in the Dark, as well as titles like Assassin's Creed Mirage, Forza Motorsport, and more.
This reason contradicts the previous statement by the developers that Remedy was not concerned with the competition in October and only wanted to make the best game that Alan Wake 2 could be. The game will now be released after the already mentioned releases of Super Mario Bros. Wonder and Spider-Man 2, with the latter appearing on one of the platforms where Alan Wake 2 will also be launched. Whether this date will strongly influence the game's chances remains to be seen.
Alan Wake 2 will be released on October 27, 2023 for PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S.
