Shadowheart presents a tough outer shell. She appears aloof, reluctant to open up, and keeps her gaze fixed on her faith and the path ahead. Oh, and getting rid of that damn tadpole. Yet beneath it all lies a kind-hearted friend. And an anecdote from a diary in the game reveals how protective she can be when it comes to those she trusts.
"I am Nocturne," the diary begins. "I think like her. I see her when I look in the mirror. I can't remember the last time someone called me by the wrong name. Shadowheart is quick to gently correct any slip-ups and even quicker to confront those who would maliciously use my discarded name. I am fortunate to have her as a friend."
Nocturne can be found in the House of Sorrow in the Lower City during the third act. She is the quartermaster of the Sharran Monastery, and you encounter her as part of Shadowheart's companion quest, "A Familiar Face." Once you are reunited, Nocturne will serve as a new merchant with whom you can trade, openly sharing her goods. If you sneak around afterwards, you will find Nocturne's diary, revealing that Shadowheart is deeply ready and willing to confront transphobic individuals who mistreat her friends. The best kind of ally.
The diary makes it quite clear that Nocturne is transgender. The term "discarded name" is simply an incredibly poetic way to describe one's birth name. Nocturne is even voiced by transgender actress and YouTuber Abigail Thorn - you may know her as the host of Philosophy Tube or as Nora in Harmony: The Fall of Reverie.
It is said that the two are old friends, but the dialogue between them makes fans wonder if there might be something more. For example, when you take control of Shadowheart and talk to Nocturne to uncover your lost memories, she will allude to a small scar on Shadowheart's elbow and a hidden place where Shadowheart used to take her. There, they would "talk, play, read, do each other's hair..."
There is also the second section in the diary: "I can take her to our secret retreat and remind her of herself. I'm getting better at it with each encounter; I love seeing that look in her eyes when she finally remembers me."
Regardless of whether you believe that the two are merely roommates or former lovers, Shadowheart is an advocate for the rights of transgender individuals.
