Sonic Superstars will change a classic gameplay element

Sonic Superstars further develops the classic 2D Sonic gameplay by removing traditional lives and game over mechanics, and instead introduces collectible medals as rewards.

The game places a greater emphasis on cooperative play while allowing four playable characters on the screen simultaneously. Additionally, it offers an online versus mode where players can compete against each other as customized Eggman robots.

Sonic Superstars introduces new metallic robot duplicates of playable characters, including Metal Tails, Metal Amy, and customizable Metal Knuckles, designed by Kazuyuki Hoshino.

The developer of Sonic Superstars, Naoto Ohshima, explains in detail how the game evolves the classic Sonic 2D gameplay, where one of the traditional lives or game-over mechanics does not exist. The upcoming entry, Sonic Superstars, places a greater emphasis on cooperative play while allowing four playable characters on the screen simultaneously. There will also be an online versus mode where players can compete against each other as customized Eggman robots in a series of platform races or battles. Superstars aims to innovate the franchise with a focus on these multiplayer elements.

Fans had the opportunity to play a preview demo of Sonic Superstars, where they could see how Sonic, Tails, Knuckles, and Amy would interact in this new adventure. By allowing fans to try out the cooperative multiplayer feature, it also provides a glimpse into how Sega has evolved its gameplay for new fans. With this new experience and the changed gameplay approach, one of the developers explains in detail how the gameplay itself has been adjusted to make this possible.

In an interview with Naoto Ohshima on ntower, he was asked how Sonic Superstars has evolved compared to the classic 2D games. He explains that one of his intentions was to create a 2D Sonic game without lives or game-over mechanics. As a result, Sonic Superstars does not feature these traditional elements, although it does impact what is rewarded when players collect 100 rings. In almost every other Sonic game, collecting 100 rings grants the player an extra life. However, in Superstars, these extra lives are replaced by a new collectible item called Medals.

Sonic Superstars Will Change One Classic Gameplay Element

In Superstars, the player is regularly awarded Medals, for example, by finding them in bonus stages or by collecting 100 rings. These Medals can then be used in the battle mode to acquire additional parts and customize their robot as desired. As shown in the release trailer of Sonic Superstars, the player can customize their playable character in the battle mode and change their appearance.

Ohshima also confirms that the new battle mode offers completely new metallic robot duplicates of the playable characters. In the franchise, for example, there has never been a "Metal Tails" or "Metal Amy" outside of the Sonic the Hedgehog Archie Comics. The versions of these robotic duplicates of Tails and Amy in this game were designed by Kazuyuki Hoshino, who previously designed Metal Sonic. Many fans were also delighted to see that the battle mode of Superstars includes a customizable Metal Knuckles, who first appeared in Sonic R but never had the opportunity to shine outside of the comics.

Sonic Superstars will be released on October 17th for PC, PS4, PS5, Switch, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
