Square Enix is developing a new tabletop role-playing game set in the universe of Final Fantasy 14. This marks the company's first officially licensed TTRPG endeavor.
The Final Fantasy 14 tabletop role-playing game will be released in May 2024 and can be pre-ordered for $59.99 USD.
The starter set will include dice, character sheets, an encounter map, and other game materials. Additional rulebooks and instructions will be offered for sale separately in the future.
While Final Fantasy 14 celebrates the tenth anniversary of its rebirth, Square Enix has announced that a new tabletop role-playing game (TTRPG) based on the world of Eorzea is in the works. The upcoming Final Fantasy 14 tabletop RPG will be the first officially licensed TTRPG to be published by Square Enix. It will include books, character sheets, dice, and other game materials to provide players with a solid starting point.
This new announcement is just the latest in honoring the redesign of Final Fantasy 14 as A Realm Reborn in 2013. Between a special quest taking place during the annual "Rising" event in Final Fantasy 14 and the upcoming release of Patch 6.5, "Growing Light," the development team of Final Fantasy 14 has not ceased to find ways to captivate players until the launch of the "Dawntrail" expansion. However, the announcement of a new product is a means to garner the attention of fans, particularly one that will mark a premiere within the Final Fantasy series.
According to Square Enix, the Final Fantasy 14 tabletop role-playing game will be released in May 2024. Pre-orders are now available at the Square Enix Store, starting at a price of $59.99 USD. The cover of the Final Fantasy 14 tabletop RPG features several races from the acclaimed MMORPG, including a pair of Roegadyn and a Hyur Midlander at the center. Characters from other races such as Lalafell and Miqo'te are also depicted in the artwork. The Final Fantasy 14 TTRPG Starter Set will include 16 dice (6d20 and 10d6), pre-generated character sheets based on jobs like Warrior and Black Mage, an encounter map, as well as some markers and books for players and game masters to use during gameplay.
Square Enix announced that the Final Fantasy 14 TTRPG Starter Set is designed for three to five players, with a recommended group size of five players. In addition to the Starter Set, a rulebook and game master's guide will be offered for purchase at a later date. At the time of writing, it is unclear whether the Final Fantasy 14 tabletop RPG will utilize proprietary rules or draw inspiration from established rule systems such as Pathfinder or a edition of Dungeons and Dragons.
Given the commercial success of Dungeons and Dragons, as well as games like Baldur's Gate 3 and the web series Critical Role, there is no indication that the tabletop role-playing game genre is losing momentum. Only time will tell whether the Final Fantasy 14 tabletop RPG will resonate with fans of both the Final Fantasy series and tabletop RPGs.
Final Fantasy 14 is now available for PC, PS4, and PS5, with a version for Xbox Series X/S set to be released in spring 2024.
