The virtual farm world of Stardew Valley would be incomplete without animals. Animals are an integral part of the farm and serve various purposes. Players can adopt a pet (cat or dog) that accompanies them on their adventures or purchase a horse for riding. Additionally, livestock can be purchased, serving as a source of healthy products such as eggs and milk.
Raising virtual animals in Stardew Valley can be quite challenging, especially when players have a limited budget at the beginning of the game. As the game progresses, players will encounter several story quests, one of which is the animal raising quest that challenges players to expand their farm.
How to Complete the Raising Animals Quest
Players need to complete the introductory quest where they have to grow and harvest radishes before they can unlock the animal raising quest.
Once triggered, the animal raising quest requires players to contact Robin and ask her to build a chicken coop or a barn. Robin is the town's carpenter in Stardew Valley and runs her own carpentry shop. She constructs new buildings on the farm in exchange for raw materials and money.
This quest does not require players to purchase any livestock.
Building a Coop
A chicken coop is a farm building that can house chickens, ducks, rabbits, and dinosaurs. To construct a chicken coop, players will need 300 wood and 100 stone. The total construction cost for a basic chicken coop is 4,000 gold coins. This chicken coop can accommodate up to 4 animals and features a hay hopper and a feeding trough to ensure the well-being of the animals.
Building a Barn
A barn is a farm building that can house cows, goats, sheep, pigs, and ostriches. To construct a barn, players will need 350 wood and 150 stone. The total construction cost for a basic barn is 6,000 gold coins, which is more expensive compared to a chicken coop. Just like the chicken coop, a basic barn can accommodate up to 4 animals and features a hay hopper and a feeding trough to ensure that the animals are well taken care of.
Robin takes three days to build both the chicken coop and the barn. The carpentry shop is open from 9 AM to 5 PM every day except Tuesdays and closes early on Fridays. When Robin is tasked with constructing buildings on the farm, her shop remains closed on the days she works.
Upon successful completion of the animal raising quest, players receive 100 gold coins as a reward.
