Starfield: Can you fly to other planets without using fast travel?

Starfield will set the gold standard for immersion in space gaming in many ways, starting from the size of its inhabited systems to the distances you can traverse on most landable planets and moons. But space is seriously vast, offering an even more daring immersion than perhaps any other gaming environment.

It is understandable, therefore, that some players would like to make thingsIt is therefore understandable that some players would like to make things as realistic as possible. To travel between star systems, you will need to access the game's menus, but can you fly between planets within a system? Here's what we have found out.

Our Attempt To Fly Between Worlds Within A System

Starfield Can You Fly To Other Planets Without Fast Travel

We respect that some of you prefer a concise answer instead of typing many words to get you to read. If that's all you're aiming for, then no, you actually cannot fly between worlds within a star system without accessing the starmap available in the game.

Traveling within a system is a more detailed version of traveling between them. You hover over the planet or other available location you want to reach, then hold down the designated button to set a course. A brief animation shows your spacecraft traversing the local area, and voila, you're there.

However, we did try. But we also attempted to land on a planet, with a similarly limited success - and at least the planets are in a range of about 2500 to 5000 kilometers upon your arrival in orbit. In comparison, other planets are billions of kilometers away, so the 'AU' numbers would (very) slowly decrease, but it would take months in the game to reach there. And we don't want you to waste months only to find out that you can't do the thing.

Please do not attempt it. Maybe someone will modify such features someday; after all, Bethesda fans are known for their love of total immersion. Right now, you are setting your course automatically.
