Starfield fans are looting a store using a puddle glitch

If you've been a fan of Bethesda games for some time, you're probably well acquainted with the invisible chest glitch called "Dawnstar" from Skyrim. Over a decade ago, a fortunate Skyrim player discovered what appeared to be an invisible chest brimming with powerful and expensive items hidden in a random cliff in Dawnstar. In reality, it was a chest filled with the inventory of a nearby merchant, but it had been accidentally placed too close to the surface, allowing fans to plunder the contents of an entire shop without consequence.

Forward into the future over a decade until the release of Starfield, and this mystery has occurred once again. This time, it's the owner of Shepherd's General Store in Akila City who will never see a single cent from potential customers again. First shared by Twitter user JamieMoranUK, a glitch was discovered revolving around what appears to be a harmless puddle. Sneak up on it from a certain angle, and you'll be greeted with a massive list of items that happen to be the entire inventory of Shepherd's General Store.

Of course, all of this is openly accessible, so you should make sure you have some kind of stealth option enabled to avoid being immediately sent to prison. Even better, this can be done multiple times since it's the inventory of a store owner. All you need to do is go to a different location and wait for 48 hours before returning with even more treasures. You could even sell your ill-gotten gains to Shepherd's General Store to really make the most of it.

If you're wondering why this even exists, it's a measure taken by Bethesda to prevent players from looting all the stores in their games. Instead of placing the store's inventory in the pockets of the shopkeeper, Bethesda chooses to place a chest directly below the store, which acts as an impregnable vault. At least it's supposed to be impregnable, but occasionally a gap opens up, and fans happily help themselves to what is essentially an infinite money generator.

It's possible that Bethesda will fix this at some point in the future, but since you can still access the chest in Dawnstar in Skyrim, it's possible they don't even care about the discovery. After all, Starfield is a single-player game, and if you want to fill your pockets with stolen items, go ahead.
