Starfield: Guide to Upgrading, Customizing, and Purchasing New Ships

While in Starfield, you may spend most of your time exploring different planets, you still need to consider your ship upgrades and customizations. Throughout the main story, you will first receive Barrett's ship called "Frontier," which has some basic statistics that will assist you in simple battles.

However, as you progress further into the solar systems with higher recommended levels, you will struggle to win battles and manage cargo capacity even on normal difficulty. To avoid this, you need to regularly invest credits in ship upgrades.

How To Buy New Ships

You can purchase new ships by visiting one of the main cities in the populated systems, such as Cydonia, Jemison, Gagarin, Akila, and Neon. Once you land in the city, you will find a ship service technician nearby. They are usually located close to trade authority kiosks and can only be found at the city's spaceport.

Sometimes, these technicians are located inside a nearby building. When you speak with them, they will give you a brief introduction about the planet you are on and then display a menu where you can either get your ship repaired for some credits, customize your ship, or buy a new ship. Every time you enter the purchase menu, you will see four to five ships.

The ships you can buy from a technician vary from planet to planet, so it's worth going to every city you can find and browsing their inventory before selecting your preferred ship. These are some of the most expensive items in the game, and you won't be able to make these purchases frequently.

When you browse a technician's inventory, you will see the rating of a specific ship (A, B, or C). However, note that if you want to fly B or C type ships, you need to improve a specific skill.

How To Upgrade And Customize Your Ship

You can start upgrading and customizing your ships by speaking with the same person and selecting the second option, indicating that you want to modify your ship. There are two ways to go about this process:

  • You can either click on the Ship Upgrades option and select one upgrade from the available slots at the bottom. This might limit your choices but it automatically fits the new part on your ship.
  • If you want to deep dive into ship customizations, you can use the Ship Builder option and choose the positioning of every single part on your ship. Keep in mind that the game won't allow you to save the changes here if your Ship isn't functional.

In the ship construction menu, you can see warning or error messages at the bottom right of the screen.

All your changes will be undone if you try to save the ship while it has the error symbol.

The ship construction area also allows you to colorize each component of your ship, allowing you to make them look very appealing.
