Starfield: How do I improve my carrying capacity?

Knowing how to improve your carrying capacity in Starfield quickly becomes one of the most important tasks on your cosmic agenda. Your starting space suit has incredibly small pockets, and true to classic Bethesda style, there are too many things lying around to simply ignore.

Fortunately, there are several ways to improve your carrying capacity, some of which are accessible very early in the game. This is the best quality improvement you can make in the early stages of your adventure, and by expanding your pockets, you can fulfill all your collecting dreams.

Ships And Companions

Starfield How To Improve Your Carrying Capacity

Your first go-to method for improving your carrying capacity in Starfield is utilizing your companions and the cargo hold of your spaceship. Your spaceship is the best option, as even the Frontier, your small starting spacecraft, has a decent carrying capacity of 450 kg, and all materials in the cargo hold are automatically used when crafting something.

This does not apply to companions, each of whom can carry a little over 100 kg of items.

When you find yourself deep in a mining facility, picking up dozens of Spacer rifles to sell later in Akila City, and then receive the dreaded warning that you're overburdened, a quick short-term solution is to pass a few small items to your loyal companion.

Since you can only move items into the cargo hold of your ship when you are near it or on board, companions serve as perfect additional bags when you are far away from home. Just remember to take all those things back from them afterwards.

Since you can only move items into the cargo hold of your ship when you are near it or on board, companions serve as perfect additional bags when you are far away from home. Just remember to retrieve all those items from them afterwards.

The challenges to increase this skill include sprinting over long distances with an almost full backpack, which you probably already do, so it shouldn't be too difficult.

It is worth mentioning that the "Payloads" ability in the Technology skill tree has the same effect on the cargo hold of your spaceship.

Upgrading Your Spacesuit

The final way to improve your carrying capacity is by upgrading your spacesuit. Simply find a spacesuit workstation - there's one in the basement of The Lodge - and add the Extra Capacity modification to your Boost Pack. This requires some prerequisites: first, you must have researched Pack Mods 2, and then you'll need to come equipped with 3 Aluminum, 3 Polymer, and 2 Sealant to install the 10 kg of additional storage space.

Slot 4 for your spacesuit mods also gives you the option to add the Pocket modification. For this, you must have researched Spacesuit Mods 2 and will need 1 Polytextile, 2 Sealant, and 1 Adhesive to craft it. This will grant you an additional 5 kg capacity. Both mods require two points in the "Spacesuit Design" ability, but if you really need to carry that extra bottle of wine, then every little advantage helps.
