Starfield: How to Change Companion's Equipment and Outfits

During your adventures in Starfield, you will encounter numerous characters. From shrewd entrepreneurs to roaming pirates and even a medical receptionist who violates the HIPAA law (if you know what I mean), many characters are bound to leave a lasting impression.

With some of these characters, you can recruit them as part of your crew and have them as companions by your side. Each of these characters has their own distinct style, but you might occasionally want to change their clothing or equipment. Here's what you need to do to modify your companion's gear.

How To Find The Companion Gear Menu

Find the companion whose gear you want to change and talk to them. Choose the dialogue option "Let's swap equipment."

This will automatically open up all the current items that your companion has in their inventory. Initially, this will usually only include their weapon and some ammunition. You can choose whether you want to take these items.

By using the "Inventory" key, you can cycle through and view your own inventory, the inventory of your ship (if you are inside or near your ship), and then the inventory of your companion.

Here, you can transfer items between your inventory and your companion's inventory. Find the item you want to give to your companion and then press the corresponding "Trade" button to place it in their inventory. Switch to their inventory, and you can select the respective items you want them to equip.

Tips For Using Your Companion's Inventory

While exploring the multitude of planets and moons in Starfield, you will undoubtedly find yourself overloaded at some point. If you allow a companion to accompany you on your adventures, they can temporarily act as a pack mule, so to speak, helping you carry the load, to put it colloquially.

Simply move all your extra items into your companion's inventory. They can carry your extra belongings until you want them back.

If you enjoy relying on stealth during combat against enemies, you should look for spacesuits with the Chameleon implant. You can give one to your companion and equip one for yourself. This will make both of you invisible when in sneak mode and not moving.
