Crafting and improving equipment has always been a core mechanic of Bethesda RPGs. Starfield is no exception, and while much has changed - from iron helmets to space suit helmets - the fundamental mechanics for enhancing weapons and armor remain the same as in previous titles like Skyrim and Fallout.
In Starfield, there are multiple stations where you can craft and explore new items. This can be somewhat confusing if you are not familiar with the crafting system of Fallout 76 or Fallout 4. From upgrading weapons to crafting high-level space suit upgrades, here is everything you need to know.
Starfield: Where To Upgrade Weapons And Spacesuits
Starfield features multiple crafting stations, including pharmaceutical labs, cooking stations, industrial workshops, as well as the space suit workbench and weapon workbench.
Not to be forgotten are the research labs, which serve to unlock new crafting components as well as weapon and space suit modifications. This can require a lot of effort to find a location where all five of them are available.
Fortunately, the Constellation Lodge in the basement has all five crafting stations. Therefore, you have everything you need to upgrade your weapons and space suit and withstand the horrors of space.
You can plunder the "Inspiring Equinox Laser Rifle" from the weapon rack on the wall next to the weapon workbench or utilize the weapon storage racks for storage purposes.
How To Use The Weapon Workbench
When you activate the weapon workbench, a list of all the weapons in your inventory, along with their statistical details, will be displayed.
From here, you navigate to the weapon you want to upgrade and select it. This will open a new menu that displays each mod slot type and the installed components of the weapon.
Each weapon has a set number of modifications that can be installed into the weapon. Therefore, you should carefully consider which modifications you want to install.
Select the type of modification you want to install. This will display a list of potential components that you could install on the weapon. On the left side, you will see the updated statistics as well as the required resources to craft the component.
How To Use The Spacesuit Workbench
The space suit workbench functions essentially the same as the weapon workbench, with a few minor but significant differences.
Your full space suit consists of three equipment pieces:
- Spacesuit
- Helmet
- Packs
You can upgrade all three types of garments from the space suit workbench. However, it can be confusing to navigate through each equipment piece since the items and their mod categories are not organized.
Unlike weapons, mod components for the space suit are categorized as barrel, optics, stock, laser, etc. Meanwhile, space suit mods are labeled as follows:
- Slot 1
- Slot 2
- Slot 3
- Slot 4
Explore all the slots to find mods that match your equipment. Mods for Slot 1 either don't require any completed research or require completed research at Level 1, while higher slots require a higher level of research projects.
How To Craft High-Tier Weapon And Spacesuit Upgrades
Completing research projects is not the only task you need to accomplish in order to be able to produce high-level space suit and weapon mods. You also need to unlock skills to be able to craft weapons and suit upgrades.
Assign skill points to the following abilities to unlock new features for the weapon workbench, the space suit workbench, and the research laboratory:
- Spacesuit Design
- Weapon Engineering
There are four ranks for each of the two abilities. To improve the skills, you need to complete the corresponding challenges and assign additional skill points.
