Bethesda takes pleasure in filling their games with a variety of different items to encourage inventory management, and Starfield is no exception. From the beginning of the game, you will find a large number of items, and most of these items have a fixed weight. Of course, you can only carry more items if you haven't reached your weight limit.
Fortunately, the game provides additional storage space in the form of cargo space in your spaceship. Although the storage space of your ship may not be very large at the beginning, there are some methods through which you can significantly increase it and permanently avoid storage issues.
How To Find Your Ship's Storage
Finding the cargo space for the Frontier, the first ship in the game, may not be difficult, but it becomes considerably more challenging as you acquire and take over additional ships during space battles. The first thing to remember about your cargo space is that you have it in two locations: the cargo hold and the captain's quarters.
Both can be found near the pilot's seat of each ship unless you have rearranged them using the ship builder. The best way to look for them on a new ship is to go directly to the pilot's seat and check each adjacent room. The cargo hold typically has an illuminated screen labeled "Cargo Hold."
Although the captain's quarters itself doesn't offer much storage space, it can be used to store your valuable items.
It is also crucial to take into consideration that your cargo always relocates whenever you change your vessel. This applies even if your new ship possesses a lesser cargo capacity compared to the previous one. For instance, if you have 1200 units of weight in items aboard a ship and switch to a vessel with a mere 200 cargo capacity, it will be displayed in the HUD as 1200/200.
How To Increase Your Ship's Storage
There are essentially three ways to increase the storage capacity of your ship, but two of them will require credits from you.
- The easiest way to increase your Cargo space is by upgrading the Payloads Skill in the Tech section. You'll need to spend at least four Skill Points in the first row to be able to upgrade this Skill, and it can increase your capacity by 50 percent at the maximum rank.
- You can buy new ships through the Ship Technician in any major city, and you can check their Cargo Capacity while browsing the stock. Keep in mind that you can't pilot the B or C-tier ships unless you upgrade the required Skill.
- Finally, you can also increase your Cargo Capacity by heading over to the "Add" section of the Ship Builder mode and choosing Cargo there. However, you'll have to fit it somewhere on your ship without causing an Error.
For most ships, you won't be able to find the upgrades to increase cargo space among the regular ship upgrades.
