Starfield - "Failure to Communicate" Quest Walkthrough

Starfield is a massive game with numerous quests to find and complete. While exploring the populated systems, it's possible to stumble upon a new quest that leads you to an uncharted planet filled with new things to discover.

"Failure to Communicate" is one of those random quests that can appear when jumping into a new system. Fixing broken relationships and hunting down spacers are just two of the things you need to prepare for when embarking on this quest. Below, we will provide a complete walkthrough for this quest, including the steps to plunder the stolen safe at the end.

How To Start The "Failure To Communicate" Quest

The starting location for the quest "Failure to Communicate" is random and can vary from playthrough to playthrough. As a result, there is no fixed location where you will find this quest. If you are determined to start this quest, try jumping into new systems until you receive the distress call from Alban Lopez.

Respond To The Distress Call

Once you have received the distress call from Alban Lopez, travel to the Lopez Farm on the specified planet. Again, the location of the Lopez Farm will vary from playthrough to playthrough.

At the Lopez Farm, speak with Alban, who will ask you to assist in repairing the communication satellites of the four families so they can regain contact.

Repair The Communication Satellites

Starfield Failure To Communicate Quest

Travel to the location of the Lopez communication satellite. Once you arrive there, you will be attacked by spacer ships. Deal with the spacers and then proceed to the satellite to activate it.

Afterward, you will need to similarly repair the communication satellites of Wen, Banda, and Lemaire. You will find them near various moons or planets in the same system where you found the Lopez satellite.

At the Bamda and Lemaire satellites, you will encounter spacer ships that will either attack when you approach the satellite or as soon as you jump to the location. Deal with these enemies and then proceed to the satellite to repair it.

On the other hand, at the Wen satellite, no spacer attacks will occur, and you can repair it without any issues.

Persuade Banda And Lemaire To Join The Defense Pact

Starfield Failure To Communicate

After repairing the communication satellites, travel to Lemaire's ship and board it. Alban wants to form a defense alliance between the families to better protect them against the spacers. You must convince Banda and Lemaire to join.

Technically, you only need to convince Banda to join the alliance, but you can try to persuade Lemaire as well. To do this, talk to her until you get the [Persuade] option and then fill the six persuasion bars to convince her. There are different combinations to achieve this, but we recommend saving your progress before talking to her in case you make a mistake.

Once you have convinced Banda and Lemaire to join, you can now launch your final attack on the spacers. Before leaving Lemaire's ship, speak with Alban. You can either request assistance from the family ships or tell him that you can handle it alone. If you are still using the Frontier ship, the support of the escort ships will greatly aid you in the upcoming battles.

Defeat The Spacers

Now, proceed to the specific locations indicated by Alban and defeat the spacers there. There will be four ships at each location, but with the assistance of the family's escort ships, it should not be a problem. Once you have completed this task, return to the Lopez Farm and speak with the family.

Your final objective is to travel to the converted Starstation and eliminate the spacers who use it as their base. While the location of the converted Starstation is random, the interior layout remains the same. There are tight corridors and many enemies, so be cautious. Be particularly careful when approaching enemies, as you could be surrounded by someone you haven't seen.

After defeating all the spacers, speak with Alban at the Starstation to claim your reward and complete "Failure to Communicate."

Loot The Stolen Safe

Starfield Failure

Before leaving the converted Starstation, you may want to do some exploration as there is a valuable reward here. If you read the logs on the computer in the command room, you will learn that the spacers have stolen a safe, which they keep in the old storage room one floor below, and the key to that safe is always kept in the room with the computer.

Turn around and grab the stolen safe key, then go downstairs and locate the safe. Opening each of these containers will reward you with a significant amount of credits, ammunition, and some decent equipment items. Although this little puzzle is technically unrelated to the "Failure to Communicate" quest, it's definitely worth taking these rewards while you're here.
