Super Mario Bros. Wonder introduces new power-ups such as the elephant form, the bubble form, and the drill form, which possess unique abilities and can be utilized by various characters.
The game also features familiar power-ups such as the Fire Flower, as well as the Item Balloon, which allows players to carry an additional power-up with them.
In addition to the new power-ups, Super Mario Bros. Wonder offers new online features, a badge system, a captivating story structure, an expansive world map, and much more.
As expected, Super Mario Bros. Wonder will feature some new power-ups. These new forms were announced and/or further elaborated on in the Super Mario Bros. Wonder Direct.
Super Mario Bros. Wonder was first announced in the June 2023 Nintendo Direct and is poised to shake up the beloved 2D adventures of Mario after seven years of the New Super Mario Bros. series and a 10-year hiatus thereafter. The art direction is new, the setting is new, and even Mario's voice is new following Charles Martinet's recent retirement from the role. It goes without saying that it is certainly a game to look forward to this fall, not only for avid Nintendo fans. That's why Nintendo has decided to continue the hype train with a new Nintendo Direct dedicated exclusively to this title.
In a specific section of the recent 15-minute presentation, the narrator described various power-ups that can be used by nearly every character in the extensive playable roster. The elephant form, briefly showcased in the announcement trailer of Super Mario Bros. Wonder, allows the character to strike enemies with its trunk, destroy blocks, and collect water to spray both on foes and flowers. It can also run across wide gaps and even deflect projectiles. The bubble form enables the player to spit homing bubbles from their hands, which can capture and defeat enemies even through walls, and it can also serve as a one-time-use trampoline. The drill form allows characters to drill through floors and ceilings, defeat more resilient enemies by touching them from below, and destroy sturdy blocks with a ground impact.
Super Mario Bros. Wonder Power-Ups List
- Bubble
- Drill
- Elephant
- Fire
Additionally, the Fire Flower was showcased, a staple in most Mario titles, but with a bit more detail than in the reveal trailer. Its mechanics have remained unchanged since New Super Mario Bros. U. Another tool introduced is the Item Balloon, which allows players to carry an additional power-up with them in case they find themselves in a challenging situation or want to switch between this and their current power-up depending on the scenario. While not a new feature, the balloon-like stylization is certainly unique.
Of course, these power-ups were by no means the only things confirmed for Super Mario Bros. Wonder. New online features were showcased, along with a brilliant badge system reminiscent of the older Paper Mario titles, the story structure, the extensive and interactive world map, and much more. When you combine this title with the remake of Super Mario RPG and the highly anticipated Super Mario Bros. film, it becomes clear that 2023 is the year of Mario.
Super Mario Bros. Wonder was released on October 20, 2023, for the Nintendo Switch.
