I'm sure that most of you reading this have had a discussion or two with a sibling or friend about who gets to play whom in a video game. Certain characters are always more popular than others, especially in a series like Super Mario Bros., where specific characters are considered more significant than others. Mario is firmly established as the main protagonist, and Princess Peach as the primary female character, and throughout the history of the series, there have been countless disputes over who gets to play them.
That was definitely the case for Super Mario Bros., at least according to the talented director Shiro Mouri, who recently revealed in an interview with Eurogamer (thanks to GamesRadar) that his daughters often had disputes over who got to play as Princess Peach in earlier 2D Mario games. Clearly annoyed by the lack of peace and tranquility in their household, Mouri set out to solve the problem by giving the popular character Daisy her debut in a mainline game.
"That's a personal family story, but I have two daughters myself, and when they played earlier Mario games, they always fought over who gets to play as Peach," he said. "Including Daisy will help resolve disputes in my own household, and besides, I thought the presence of Daisy is something that many Mario fans would be happy about!"
Daisy has become quite a popular character in recent years, primarily due to her appearances in spin-off titles like Mario Kart and Mario Tennis. In that sense, she is very similar to Waluigi, where fans have been pushing for his inclusion in mainline titles. The high demand undoubtedly played a role in her inclusion in Super Mario Bros. Wonder. It's amusing to hear how Mouri managed to kill two birds with one stone, and hopefully, there will be fewer disputes now when he and his daughters play the game.
It also seems to be a quite fun time because Nintendo recently shared new gameplay during a standalone Direct for the game, which took place earlier this week. We were able to see a variety of new abilities that players can use, including skill badges that allow you to jump on walls, glide with the hat, and much more. We also received confirmation that almost every character in the game can transform into an elephant. That's something Yoshi is probably not too thrilled about since he now has to drag around a whole party of elephants through each level. Poor little guy.
