The director of Final Fantasy 14 is discussing how long he plans to support the game

The director of Final Fantasy 14 and the development team are planning to support the game for another ten years, ensuring a long-term future for the MMORPG.

The success of the game has led to four expansions, with the upcoming Dawntrail expansion aiming to provide a fresh start and a high level of catharsis.

Yoshida hopes to release at least three more expansions before he turns 60, and the length and size of the future content will be adjusted based on player feedback.

The director and producer of the long-running MMORPG, Final Fantasy 14, recently revealed their intention to provide support for the game for another decade. The MMO has been running for quite some time, and with the year 2023 marking Final Fantasy 14's 10th anniversary, it has become one of the most successful projects in Square Enix's catalog since Naoki Yoshida assumed the role of producer and director. It continues to receive ongoing support even to this day.

The success of Final Fantasy 14 has led to the release of four expansions throughout its decade-long tenure. With the conclusion of the storyline in Endwalker, which began back in 2013, the game is set to embark on a completely new beginning with the Dawntrail expansion scheduled for summer 2024. As the game has been running for a decade, some fans wonder how much longer it will endure. Director Naoki Yoshida has addressed the future of the game and expressed his commitment, along with the team, to continue working on the MMORPG.

In an interview with Famitsu, Yoshida reflected on the success and legacy of Final Fantasy 14 over the past ten years. The director then commented that he and the development team have plans to continue working on and supporting the game for another ten years. He emphasizes that the main question is how the team should distinguish themselves from their previous work but expresses enthusiasm about entering a new creative phase.

Final Fantasy 14 Director Talks About How Long He Plans to Support the Game

He mentioned how the Endwalker expansion closed the book on the overarching narratives of Final Fantasy 14, which he described as somewhat unconventional since MMOs typically shouldn't have a traditional ending. However, he noted that the conclusion of Endwalker allowed them to pave the way for Dawntrail, which should provide a similar level of catharsis as the previous expansion. He does acknowledge that Dawntrail might be somewhat slower-paced compared to the very dramatic ending of Endwalker, as it represents the beginning of a new story.

Yoshida had previously stated the number of expansions planned for Final Fantasy 14 after Dawntrail, expressing his hope to release at least three more before he turns 60. The director will be 51 years old when Dawntrail is released in 2024, and two additional expansions are already in the works. The length and scope of the story and expansions following Dawntrail will be adjusted based on the audience's response. Yoshida concluded the interview by expressing gratitude to the many Final Fantasy 14 players and asking them to look forward to the upcoming expansion.

Final Fantasy 14 is now available for PC, PS4, and PS5, and a version for Xbox Series X/S will be available in spring 2024.
