The first "Toasty!" Easter Egg from Mortal Kombat 1 has been found

The latest trailer for Mortal Kombat 1 has finally confirmed the return of the "Toasty!" Easter Egg, which can be found in nearly every game of the series.

Mortal Kombat is renowned for a multitude of aspects - the rivalry between Scorpion and Sub-Zero, the brutal finishing moves, the crazy mini-games, and the quirky rewards in the Krypt, to name just a few. However, one of the things fans adore the most about the series is its abundant Easter Eggs, ranging from glitch macros to the origin of the name Noob Saibot.

Within the series, there are numerous long-running jokes, but perhaps one of the most enduring is the "Toasty!" Easter Egg, which originated in Mortal Kombat 2. In this game, there was a chance that if a player successfully executed an uppercut, Dan Forden, the sound designer of Mortal Kombat at that time, would appear in the corner and exclaim "Toasty!" in a high-pitched voice.

The Easter Egg has appeared in numerous Mortal Kombat games, either through the naming of specific moves (usually associated with fire, often attributed to Scorpion) or through the identical sound and image of Forden popping up. So far, we hadn't heard anything about the Toasty Easter Egg appearing in Mortal Kombat 1, but fortunately, the latest trailer for the game has revealed its return.

As Twitter user WeBeenCroft pointed out, the iconic "Toasty!" sound effect can actually be heard during Johnny's second Fatality, showcased in the Jean-Claude Van Damme reveal trailer. After kicking the opponent through the car window and splitting them in half, Johnny presses a button to activate the car's nitro boost. While the engine comes to life, emitting flames, a faint "Toasty!" can be heard in the background.

It may take a few listens to hear it correctly (or at least it took me a few listens to hear it correctly), but it's definitely there and confirms the long-standing Easter Egg's return for Mortal Kombat 1. Whether we will also see Forden's face appear in the game is something we'll have to wait to find out.

That being said, it is worth noting that Mortal Kombat 11 had a few different "Toasty!" references, such as Forden's face appearing on the tournament stage after performing an uppercut and the sound clip being part of Scorpion's "Crispy" Fatality, which is itself a play on words with "toasty."
