The first game was revolutionary for its time - the context-sensitive barks, the ingenious pawn system, the dynamic combat, and the unforgiving quest system made it a truly unforgettable experience. I can't wait to see how Capcom will build upon this legacy.

Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth

Matt Arnold

TheGamer Staff

It would be very fitting for my trademark to say that my most anticipated title for the PS5 would be something like "Rise Of The Ronin" or "Flintlock," but I have to face reality. No matter what pseudo-historical niche titles the console may reach in 2024, none of them will resonate with me as much as spending more time with the FF7 crew. You win this time, Square Enix.

Skull And Bones

David W. Duffy

TheGamer Staff

It's fair to say that this game has had a pretty tough life so far, as it has been in development for a decade. Last year, I had the opportunity to participate in a technical test, and while I can't disclose my experiences due to certain legal reasons, it did make me ponder on how the final game will be despite all its issues. Sure, there are games like FF7 Rebirth that I'm genuinely excited about for fun reasons, but this is less about a game I expect due to hype and more about a growing fascination that hasn't left me since that brief weekend.

Crimson Desert

Harry Alston

TheGamer Staff

The trailer for Crimson Desert at Gamescom Opening Night Live blew me away. I've been playing Black Desert Online for years, so it's exciting to see Pearl Abyss translate everything they've learned from the MMO - immersive mini-games, world-building, and horse drifts - into a single-player adventure.

My biggest issue with BDO has always been the microtransactions, and while there may be offers for cosmetics and other equipment items, it's unlikely that Crimson Desert will have as many premium currencies as the MMO. The game has skyrocketed to the top of my most anticipated games for 2024... if the game is even released in 2024 at all!

Prince Of Persia: The Lost Crown

George Foster

TheGamer

I hope that the fact that my most anticipated game for 2024 is releasing so early in the year is a sign that a great year lies ahead for me and not that it will be a bit empty. Putting skepticism aside, is there a better way to start the year than with a new Prince of Persia developed by the team behind Rayman Origins and Legends? That's a rhetorical question; there literally is no better way. I was already excited by the trailers, but after playing a demo at Gamescom, I'm certain that The Lost Crown is a game to watch out for. I wish I had time-controlling powers to fast-forward to January...

Death Stranding 2

Joshua Robertson

I have to admit that I'm probably a little optimistic about this game. So far, we've seen very little of Death Stranding 2, but I'm a fan of that particular kind of mystery that is present in most of Kojima's games, even if the stories he writes are usually complete nonsense.

However, I would love to revisit the world of Death Stranding soon, and another trek through the USA with relaxing music and the soothing sounds of nature is exactly the therapeutic experience I need right now. Either that, or Death Stranding 2 will discard everything from the first game and completely change the way the game functions. You never know with Kojima.

Bye Sweet Carole

Stacey Henley, Editor-In-Chief

Bye Sweet Carole is a small indie game developed by a new Italian studio that I knew nothing about until I was invited to preview it at Gamescom. In the end, it was my game of the show. This horror platformer is essentially Alice: Madness Returns, based on Sleeping Beauty, and captivates with a beautifully nostalgic Disney-style reminiscent of the Silver Age. Every frame of this 2D adventure is hand-drawn, making it a technical marvel as well. With all the photorealistic look that the next year will bring on the PS5, this is my standout choice among the crowd.

Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth

Josh Coulson

I am deeply confused about the direction Square Enix seems to be leading us on our newly redesigned Final Fantasy 7 journey in 2024, but somehow I am absolutely on board. A remake should deviate significantly from the original path while still remaining reasonably faithful to the source material, and I have full confidence that Rebirth will do just that, like the Remake did. What I'm really not looking forward to is the four-year wait between Rebirth and what comes next. Why did they have to tell us that this will be a trilogy?
