We asked Amelia Tyler who her favorite character in Baldur's Gate 3 is, and despite spending a considerable amount of time as the narrator of the game, she couldn't name a definite favorite. However, she mentioned that her romantic choice would be Karlach, the wild barbarian Devil's Blood Tiefling.
"I must withhold my judgment because I haven't completed the entire game yet," Tyler told us, discussing her absolute favorite character in Baldur's Gate 3. "There are many situations where I'm familiar with the narrative that accompanies this character, and I'm truly fascinated to see how they are brought to life. I can't choose a favorite because, especially with the companion characters, their entire player experience is being narrated by me in this game."
I have witnessed all their highs and lows. I have seen them at their best and worst moments. It's almost like with best friends. Therefore, I can't choose a favorite because I know all their weaknesses and strengths [...] If you've only played the game once or twice, you might have only seen one side of them [...] It's getting to know all these different aspects of a character. I think it will truly open people's eyes to how complex people are in real life [...] As for romance, Karlach, it would be Karlach.
Since her reveal, Karlach has been incredibly popular, not to mention that she now finally joins the team as a companion in the full release. You can either include her in your campaign as one of your party members or play as her thanks to the origin character mechanics.
After Baldur's Gate 3 left Early Access, the price of her Magic: The Gathering card increased from $2 to $5.90 - understandably, people are excited about Karlach. But when it comes to her romantic popularity... most people have chosen someone else.
Last month, game developer Larian Studios revealed a series of statistics, including the most popular class, species, and the number of people who completed the game in such a short time. The statistics also included the most popular romantic choices. Shadowheart topped the list, followed by Gale. Meanwhile, Astarion was rejected by 100,000 people. Perhaps it will work out better next time.
Admittedly, a significant portion of the romance in Baldur's Gate 3 was due to a bug. According to Swen Vincke, "the approval thresholds were too low at release. That's why they were so easy to romance at the beginning. It shouldn't have been like that. We've since fixed it, at least for some of them. We're still working on correcting some of them."
Therefore, Gale was so popular. But apparently, people liked that, as he rose to become the second most popular romantic choice. Where is the love for Karlach?
