Like many other sandbox games, Cyberpunk 2077 also has its own police force. However, just like in other sandbox games, they pose little threat. If you get caught committing a crime, you simply have to quickly flee from them for a minute or so, and everything is forgiven. You can even commit a murder spree and hide behind a wall. Eventually, they give up and end the pursuit.
Finally, with the Cyberpunk 2077 Version 2.0 update, that has changed. Now, police encounters are as dangerous as they should be in such a oppressive and dystopian city like Night City. And even better, if you draw the attention of MaxTac to the point where they're after you, it's as good as a death sentence. Players find these revamped Cyberpsycho fighters "invincible" in combat, even at higher levels.
On the Cyberpunk 2077 subreddit, fans are sharing their attempts to defeat MaxTac - and it's not going well. In the video below, the player barely has time to exit their vehicle before a MaxTac soldier zooms in with their Sandevistan and immediately takes them out.
As another player notes, it hardly makes a difference to even acquire an armed police vehicle. As long as a squad of these trained killers is after you, it's about much more than just finding a big weapon. Instead, you have to use everything in your arsenal to outsmart and survive the killing machines on your trail.
I just tried it on my max-level save file that I've had since the beginning, and yes, I was quickly overwhelmed. Some players say they managed to defeat MaxTac, but most of us are still struggling, and it's easy to understand why. Nothing can prepare you for being pursued by one of the deadliest factions, determined to neutralize you.
That doesn't mean all the issues with the police have been resolved. They are still far too easy to shake off, even after slaughtering dozens of them. When I actively tried to attract more attention from them, I accidentally lost all the wanted stars by hiding directly in front of them behind a wall. At least at the MaxTac level, there was no escape anymore.
MaxTac was already quite intimidating, but in Cyberpunk 2077, we didn't really have the opportunity to face off against their toughest members. In fact, one of our few interactions with them was to clean up their mess and deal with the cyberpsychos they couldn't take down. Then, in Cyberpunk: Edgerunners, we got a glimpse of what they were truly capable of, and it far exceeded what we saw in the game. This latest update heavily draws inspiration from the anime, so it's not surprising that they took the opportunity to present us with the more impressive version of MaxTac from the series.
