The Sims 4 and its expansions offer a variety of beings with whom you can interact or play as. One type of Sim that you can encounter from time to time is the ghost. These are deceased Sims who can haunt eerie locations and appear near their own graves.
While you cannot create a ghost Sim in the "Create a Sim" menu, you will have the opportunity to play as a ghost later on. In this guide, we will take a look at the steps you need to follow in order to play as a ghost in The Sims 4.
What Is A Ghost?
To put it simply, ghosts are Sims that have died. They can appear in different colors that reflect their current mood. For example, if you see a red ghost, it means they are angry. These colors correspond to the colored moods of living Sims.
In The Sims 3, the color of a ghost depended on how they died. For example, ghosts who drowned were blue, and ghosts who died in a fire were orange.
The cause of death can also be reflected in the appearance or personality of the spirit. In The Sims 4, it is possible to die from laughter. If this is the way the spirit has passed, it will make nearby Sims cheerful and playful.
If your vampire Sim, on the other hand, burns and dies, their spirit will have a sun within them.
How To Add A Ghost To Your Household
The easiest way to play as a ghost is to add them to your household. Just like with living Sims, you can make ghosts into friends and eventually ask them to move in with you.
Once this is done, the ghost will be in your household, and you can play as them. If you don't feel like building a relationship with that particular ghost, you can also use cheats to add them to your household.
To do this, you first need to enable cheats. Press Ctrl + Shift + C to open the cheat console and enter the following command.

On a Mac, you need to press Command + Shift + C. On consoles, simply press all four shoulder buttons simultaneously.
After pressing the Enter key, you simply need to hold down the Shift key and click on the ghost. This will bring up an expanded radial menu with the option to add the ghost to your household. Once the ghost is in your household, you can play as them just like any other Sim.
Ghosts In The Gallery
If there are no ghosts in sight, you can also add them to your household or world through the Gallery. Many other Simmers have created ghosts that can be found there.
Summoning Ghosts As A Spellcaster
If you have the "Realm of Magic" expansion, you can use the spell "Necrocall." This is an Untamed spell at the Acolyte level that summons the dead from their final resting place.
Once summoned, their ghost will remain present, and you can add them to your household. Alternatively, you can also use the Dedeathify spell, which transforms the subject from a ghost into a living Sim.
How To Become A Ghost Using Cheats
With the help of cheats, you can also play as a ghost. These cheats will affect the Sim you have currently selected and allow you to choose what type of ghost they are.
To use these cheats, you first need to follow the steps mentioned in the previous section to enable cheats. Remember, simply press the mentioned keys and enter "testingcheats on".
With cheats enabled, you can enter one of the following cheats to transform your Sim into a ghost.
If you're looking for the easiest ghost option, we recommend using the cheat for ghosts that appear due to their advanced age. These ghosts are relatively straightforward to handle; although they don't have any special effects, they have no restrictions and feel like regular, living Sims.
If your Sim dies without cheats, you cannot play as a ghost. These cheats are the only way to transform your living Sim into a ghost and still be able to play as them.
