In The Sims 4, there is a diverse range of skills that your Sims can develop to enrich their lives and enhance your gameplay. Many of these skills can eventually be utilized for different careers, allowing your Sims to become wealthy or earn some extra Simoleons (§) on the side.
With the writing skill in The Sims 4, your Sim can engage in activities such as writing and selling novels, short stories, working as a columnist, or becoming a freelance writer, among other possibilities. In this guide, we will cover everything you need to know about the writing skill, including the perks it offers and the career options available for your Sim.
Buy A Computer
One of the initial requirements for your Sim to begin writing is to have a computer. If you obtain a pre-furnished house, there is a possibility that it already includes a computer. However, if that's not the case, you will need to purchase one.
To buy a computer you need to:
- Go into Build Mode
- Select Objects By Room on the left side
- Select Study
- Choose a computer you can afford and place it on a desk or table
The least expensive computer available in The Sims 4 costs §800, so ensure that your Sim has at least that amount of Simoleons. Additionally, budget for a desk and chair, which will require at least an additional §360.
How To Start Building Writing Skill
After your Sim has acquired a computer, click on the computer itself, then choose the option to "Write," followed by selecting "Practice Writing."
At level one, your Sim will have the ability to practice writing and write children's books. They won't be able to start selling any books until they reach level two in the writing skill.
The variety of writing options available to your Sim (such as Mystery Books, Motivational Books, etc.) will depend on their skill level in writing.
If you attempt to rapidly level up your Sim's writing skill by continuously writing books, they may experience writer's block. This will cause their mood to become tense, and they will lose their motivation to write.
We suggest utilizing the Practice Writing option more frequently during the early levels, in between writing books, to efficiently level up without facing the negative consequences of writer's block.
How To Write And Sell Novels In The Sims 4
Once you reach a stage where you feel confident in your Sim's writing skill, it is time to begin writing books and selling them for profit.
To write a book, click on your Sim's computer and choose the option "Write" followed by "Genre Writing." Then, select the specific type of book you wish to write. The available options will depend on your Sim's current level of writing skill.
A few seconds after your Sim begins writing, a screen will appear displaying the title and description of the book. If desired, you can modify the title and description at this point.
Click on the checkmark button, and your Sim will resume writing. Remember to give them occasional breaks to attend to their needs.
Once the book is completed, you can self-publish it by interacting with the mailbox. Simply click on the mailbox and choose the option "Self-Publish." A list of all the books that your Sim has finished will appear. Select the desired book(s) from the list, and your Sim will begin earning daily royalties from their published works.
Depending on your Sim's skill level and mood, they can produce books of different quality levels. These levels include Normal, Good, Excellent, and Bestseller. The quality of the book directly affects the amount of royalties your Sim earns from them.
Moreover, if your Sim is experiencing a powerful emotion (such as Very Inspired, Very Sad, etc.) while writing, it will enhance the quality of the book they produce.
Sell To Publisher
Once your Sim reaches level five in their writing skill, they have the option to sell their books to publishers, which can result in higher royalties compared to self-publishing. To sell a book to a publisher, go to the mailbox once again, but this time choose the option "Sell to Publisher."
Submit To Literary Digest
At level 9, your Sim gains the ability to submit their written works to a Literary Digest. This can be done in the same way as self-publishing or selling to a publisher, by using the mailbox. By submitting novels to the Literary Digest, your Sim will earn double the amount in daily royalties compared to other publishing methods.
What Careers Are Good For Writing Skill In The Sims 4
Writing and selling novels is not the sole application of the writing skill for your Sim. There are also several careers where the writing skill proves to be useful.
The first career option for writing is Freelance Writer. By selecting this career, you have the ability to set your Sim's schedule and choose writing gigs to work on.
Each writing gig will have a specific writing skill level requirement and a set of tasks that must be completed before the due date. This career option offers great flexibility for Sims who prefer to work independently and be their own boss.
The next career option is the Writer Career, which offers two branches for your Sim to pursue: Author and Journalist. Initially, your Sim will start as a Writer's Assistant, earning a wage of §25 per hour. However, once you reach rank five in the career, you will have the opportunity to choose between the Author branch or the Journalist branch.
Prior to selecting a specific career path, if you have the Discover University Expansion Pack, you can send your Sim to college to pursue a degree in Journalism, Authorship, or Freelance Writing. This expansion pack allows your Sim to receive specialized education in their chosen writing field.
Obtaining a Writer Degree provides career benefits such as easier promotions, higher pay, increased vacation time, and a sign-on bonus. These perks enhance your Sim's professional growth and rewards for their educational achievement.
