Yesterday, the original game Saints Row turned 17 years old. As an exclusive title for the Xbox 360, often referred to as a GTA clone, it was released with tremendous success. Over the past two decades, this led to three sequels, the spin-off Gat out of Hell, Agents of Mayhem, a remaster of the third game, and a reboot.
However, when asked if the first two games would ever be brought to the current console generation, the official Saints Row Twitter responded with the words, "We have no plans to remake them."
Fans have long been inquiring about remakes and remasters of Saints Row 1 and 2. While the first game is playable on Xbox One and Series through the backward compatibility program, it was never made available for PC or PlayStation like its successors. On the other hand, Saints Row 2 was released for PC, but the port is highly flawed on modern hardware and requires adjustments and modifications to run properly.
In the original game Saints Row, the Boss is introduced to the gang that would ultimately lead them to presidency and galactic dominance. The more grounded storyline was often compared to Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas, but with Keith David as the main character. There are significant twists that set the stage for the sequels, featuring iconic characters like Benjamin King, and of course, showcasing why Johnny Gat has always been the Saints' right-hand man.
The first two games also took place in Stilwater, not in Steelport, a city that the series largely departed from with the third game. Saints Row 2 also introduces Pierce and Shaundi, showing how the Boss recruited them, while fan-favorite Carlos is also featured. We get to see how Stilwater has changed after the events of the first game, as the mega-corporation Ultor began cracking down on gang warfare. If you haven't tried them yet, don't be deterred by the lack of a remake - they are still worth experiencing today.
While the first two Saints Row games won't be receiving a remake anytime soon, according to the reputable Dealabs user bilbil-kun, known for accurate leaks regarding PS Plus updates, the reboot is expected to come to PS Plus in September. They claim that the reboot will be available as a free monthly game in September and will be accessible until October 3rd.
It was released with a relatively low Metacritic rating of 61 - we gave it three out of five stars - but Volition has continued to release extensive updates to address many of the issues players encountered at launch. Now, you can take the risk and see how much has changed since its initial release last year, without any additional cost.
