Microsoft has introduced new color-shifting options for gamers to personalize their controllers in the Xbox Design Lab. While Xbox frequently releases custom controllers with visually appealing color schemes and designs, the Xbox Design Lab allows many gamers to truly showcase their personality.
Launched in 2016, the Xbox Design Lab provides customers with the option to choose their own colors for different components of the Xbox controller, including the body, thumbsticks, triggers, and D-pad. The basic customization is available at the same price as purchasing a standard controller. For an additional fee, customers can select metallic colors, rubberized grips, and even add an engraved message. Moreover, those who opt for an Xbox Elite Series 2 controller can customize the color of the thumbstick's accent ring.
In 2021, Xbox unveiled the Aqua Shift custom controller featuring a glossy, color-shifting surface. This was followed by the release of the Stellar Shift and Lunar Shift Xbox controllers. Due to their immense popularity, Microsoft has now introduced color-shifting options to the Xbox Design Lab. These options include the Aqua, Lunar, and Stellar Shift colors, as well as the new Cosmic Shift, which is a white color with a pink shimmer. It's important to note that these color-shifting options are only available for the body or front faceplate of the Xbox controller, and selecting one will incur an additional cost of $9.99 on top of the base price.
Enabling gamers to personalize their Xbox controller according to their preferences has resulted in a wide array of unique designs. Many individuals proudly share their creations on social media, serving as inspiration for those who may feel overwhelmed by the abundance of options. Moreover, the front page of the Xbox Design Lab website regularly features a collection of customized Xbox controllers inspired by popular games such as Overwatch, Destiny 2, and the recently launched Lies of P, providing further ideas for customization.
Prior to the unveiling of the official limited-edition Starfield Xbox controller, numerous fans had already utilized the Design Lab to craft their own versions inspired by the Bethesda RPG. However, apart from providing an avenue for self-expression, the ability to choose a controller's color scheme can also serve a practical purpose. For instance, one gamer shared that they utilized the Xbox Design Lab to create a controller that better matched their wife's home decor. As a result, many Xbox enthusiasts are now hopeful that the company will expand customization options by offering personalized wraps for their Series X or S consoles.
